AUKUS Pact

The Australia, United Kingdom and United States Security pact which will lead to the delivery of nuclear submarines to Australia requires Australia to manage the radioactive waste generated by the submarines.

Finding a long-term radioactive waste management site has been a challenge. Past proposed locations has been met with community oppositions.

From an issue management standpoint, the government should begin an early consultation process with the goal of obtaining ‘social license’ to successfully locate a long-term radioactive waste storage facility.

Benjamin produced a model issue brief on the issue.
